Grouting is a technical method with many applications, e.g. it is used for soil stabilization and strengthening, for reducing the ingress of water into underground facilities or the leakage through a dam foundation etc. Grouts may comprise several constituents which are combined in many ways, depending on the in-situ conditions and the outcome desired each time (Non-veiller, 1989). A distinction is made between cement-based grouts (suspensions) and chemical grouts (solutions). The major component of a hydraulic hardening grout is a cement suspension and of chemical grout are epoxy resins or solutions. The most suitable grouting material fulfils the following requirements (Widmann, 1996): 1. To be able to penetrate easily into the soil pores; 2. To be able to reach a large radius with low pressure; 3. To be able to fill the voids completely; 4. To maintain the required properties in the hardened state. In this paper the improvement of the physical and mechanical properties of sand injected with a water-soluble two-component epoxy resin is investigated. The experiments were carried out using either epoxy resin only (one-shot process), or in combination with sodium silicate (two-shot process). The properties studied were: Compressive strength 1. Elastic modulus 2. Permeability 3. Porosity 4. Dry unit weight The final conclusion is that the compressive strength of the sand specimens injected using the one-shot process is lower than that of the two-shot process. The permeability and porosity of the sand were reduced much more for the one-shot process.
