DEVELOPMENT AND EVALUATION OF THE FLOWER IDENTIFICATION DATABASE FOR MOBILE WITH A GEO-TAGGED PICTURE MAP

We developed a system for creating geo-taggedrnobservational picture maps that makes use of a GPSrnlogger that is equipped with a database of flowers that canrnbe used for the identification of these flowers. Thisrndatabase includes 961 color photographs of 220 varietiesrnof flowers that are commonly found in Japan. The systemrnhas the following functionalities: the ability to search andrnidentify flowers by season, color, and name; the ability tornview high-resolution video clips showing scenes that arerndifficult to observe, such as the dispersal of seeds;rndetailed explanations on the method of identifying similarrnflowers that are hard to distinguish; and the ability tornassist in the creation of an observational picture map byrnautomatically showing photographs together withrnobservational comments on a Google Maps based on GPSrnsignal data. The system was trialed with 208 sophomorernuniversity students as part of a fieldwork involving thernobservation of wild flowers. As a result of the trial, therneffectiveness of the system was validated in the followingrnfour domains: (1) interest, motivation, and attitude; (2)rnthinking and decision making; (3) technique andrnexpression; and (4) knowledge and understanding.
