The increasing demand for broadband requires either the migration from the existing access network to the broadband network or, esp. in green-field areas the building of a new one. In both cases the deployment of optical fibre cables is necessary to create a future-proof platform. Beside high costs for broadband systems the real bottleneck is the very high cost for the optical cable installation in any case. In urban and city areas, where at least in Europe the cables are buried in ground, more than 75percent of the whole investment cost are for civil works and cable laying, typically. Therefore is a growing interest to breaking the economic barrier by using alternative ways for cable laying technologies in order to minimise th ecivil works part. This presentation describes the techniques of different alternative cable laying concepts by applying either new installation techniques or using the free space in existing routes in other like telecommunication ducts (lie drink water pipes,...). Advantages and disadvantages of each technique will be discussed. The alternative technologies will be compared with conventional technologies in terms of costs, efficiency, installation speed and other aspects. The results of the techno-economic considerations will be presented and applicable guidelines for the incumbent telco operators are given.
