Molecular beam mass spectrometry (MBMS) is one of the most widely used techniques for the investigation of flat, premixed, laminar flames. Analysis of the detailed flame chemistry by MBMS provides experimental mole fraction profiles of stable and radical species, which is used to develop, improve and validate chemical kinetic reaction mechanisms. Typically, electron ionization has been used in MBMS instruments, providing an overview of the species mix in flames. With the emergence of tunable vacuum UV photoionization MBMS experiments with high energy resolution, isomer identification has been made possible. Complementary information on a large series of flames is now available using both types of instruments. Advantages of the combination of these two approaches are presented with an emphasis on alcohol combustion.
