Different soot models are incorporated in numerical computations of combusting transient gas jets under Diesel conditions. Models for formation, oxidation, collisions and coalescence of soot particles are incorporated within the context of a discrete particle approach. Two models for soot formation are considered. One model is typically used in current engine computations and the other model includes the effects of surface growth of soot particles. Four oxidation models for soot are employed. Two models are purely kinetic models and the other two are hybrid kinetic-mixing controlled models. The size, mass and distribution of soot appear to depend on the formation and oxidaton models. It appears that turbulent mixing has a noticeable influence on oxidation after the end of fuel injection.
