THE RELATIONSHIP OF NEARSHORE SANDBAR CONFIGURATIONTO SHORELINE CHANGE

In this work we examine the relationship between shoreline changernduring a single storm event and the configuration of the nearshore sandbar field. Ourrnspecific hypothesis is that the shoreline change caused by storms along the OuterrnBanks of North Carolina is reduced onshore of regions where there is more than onernalongshore sandbar. Observations of sandbar position obtained with an aerial videornsystem are compared with measurements of shoreline change obtained fromrncoincident beach surveys. The data were collected during a period of six weeks,rnincluding the effects of a storm whose significant wave height exceeded 3.5 m.rnAlong 80 km of coastline surveyed, three distinct segments experienced little or nornshoreline change. There were only at locations where there was more than onernsandbar present, suggesting a relationship between shoreline change and the numberrnof offshore sandbars.
