COBBLES TO DIATOMS:FACIES VARIABILITY IN A PALEO-TSUNAMI DEPOSIT

Sedimentary deposits from tsunami run-up across coastal dunes and intornfreshwater wetlands at Henderson Bay on the northeast coast of New Zealand range fromrncobble-sized lithic clasts to sand, pumice and microscopic diatoms. The deposit remainsrnwell preserved as extensive, well defined gravel sheets on sand dunes and as a landwardrntapering sand-pumice interbed within peaty sediments of a freshwater wetland. A highrndegree of spatial variability exists within the Henderson Bay deposit, reflecting localrnvariations in tsunami run-up patterns, sediment sources, and post-depositional reworking.rnThe Henderson Bay deposit therefore offers valuable physical information forrnunderstanding the spatial variability in tsunami deposits that can be utilised in futurernmodelling studies of tsunami behaviour.
