The SAR sea ice community consists of operationalrnusers, radar and computer engineers who performrnsensor verification and algorithm development, andrnclimate scientists who want to use changes in sea icerncharacteristics to quantify climate change. The SARrnsensors on board the RADARSAT and Envisat satelliternsystems are providing the sea ice community withrnseveral gigabytes/day in data. Algorithms have beenrncreated and validated to automatically locate the icernedge. The RADARSAT geophysical processor systemrnhas produced a multiyear record of arctic sea icernmotion, sea ice deformation, and new ice formation.rnUncertainties still exist in totally automated sea icernclassification particularly for the new ice, young ice,rnand first year ice categories. The multi-frequency andrnmulti-polarization SAR data obtainable from arncombination of Envisat, RADARSAT 2, and ALOSrn(and other SAR sensors) can potentially be used to aidrnin differentiating the thin ice types.
