OPERATIONAL MONITORING OF COASTAL AND MARINE ENVIRONMENT WITHSPACEBORNE SAR SYSTEMS: WHERE ARE WE NOW AND WHERE ARE WE GOING

The 2nd workshop on Coastal and Marine Applicationsrnof Synthetic Aperture Radar was held in SvalbardrnNorway on 8-12 September 2003. This conference wasrnfocused on providing an overview of the tools nowrnavailable within the international community forrnutilizing synthetic aperture radar (SAR) systems torncharacterize the marine environment. Applicationsrnwere specifically focused on wind, waves, sea ice, andrncurrents. This paper provides an overview of therndiscussions from that workshop and proposes the nextrnsteps along the road of achieving true operational usagernof SAR sensors for monitoring the marinernenvironment.
