Haifa Economic Corporation are planning to construct a new marina at Haifa, Israel. The marina is to be protected from the most severe westerly waves by a number of breakwaters and seawalls. To attract tourists a crescent shaped beach of golden sand is to be constructed to the southwest end of the marina complex. This paper follows the development of the proposed Haifa Marina Resort, from initial design to the optimisation of the breakwater and artificial beach sections.rnThis paper will consider the innovative numerical and physical modeling techniques used to determine the stability and hydraulic performance of the breakwaters and the plan shape / cross sections of the beach. The physical model tests were essential to the success of the project, and a number of modifications were implemented during the optimisation tests. Comparative tests were carried out to assess the performance of the structures armoured with Accropode and Dolos units. Dolos units were chosen to reduce overtopping of the breakwater sections. The stability and overtopping / transmission performance of the sections were compared with recommended international guidelines. All structures passed the required standards.rnIn order to reduce loss of the beach material, and therefore reduce subsequent beach recharge volumes, a 150m long breakwater was designed to shelters part of the beach. A submerged rock sill was included to retain the beach material along the rest of the frontage.
