The effect of hydrogen transfer from pressurized gas or solvent on the upgrading of cobaltrnexchanged Adaro coal was discussed. Further, the catalytic effect of exchanged Co on thernhydroliquefaction of Co exchanged coal was also discussed in comparison with the results after thernliquefaction of the demineralized coal or complex [(C5H5)2Co or Co2(CO)8] added demineralized coal.rnThe amounts of transferred hydrogen from tetralin and pressurized hydrogen gas on the liquefactionrnof Co exchanged coal with pressurized hydrogen gas plus any solvent (tetralin, decalin or naphthalene)rnwere almost equal to those of complex added demineralized coal. However, the upgrading of Cornexchanged coal occurred preferentially in comparison with that of complex added coal. In particular,rnthe yield of residue was only 0.3 % after the liquefaction of Co exchanged coal with tetralin plusrnpressurized hydrogen gas.rnAccordingly, it was considered that the upgrading of Co exchanged coal was enhanced significantlyrnbecause Co dispersed finely into the coal macromolecules with attached carboxyl group irrespective ofrnthe size of coal molecule.
