A major concern in industrial aqueous cleaning is to avoid corrosion and discoloration of metal substrates both during and after the cleaning process. The purpose of this paper is to investigate and discuss the corrosion on various metals as a function of the corrosion inhibitors and builders typically used in aqueous cleaning. While it is impossible to cover every material and its effects on every metal, most of the common materials used to prevent corrosion were investigated and tested on four of the most often used materials: carbon steel, aluminum, brass, and copper. Two general test methods were used to research this paper. The first was a standard aerospace test method in which coupons of metal are immersed in a solution for a given period of time and the observations are recorded. The second involved a standard cleaning cycle after which the test coupons were dried and placed in a humidity chamber. The onset and development of rust were then monitored. Corrosion observations in both cases were broken down as pitting, staining, discoloration, and red rust. The scope of this paper was limited to aqueous based cleaners and materials used in those products. The metals selected for testing were limited but chosen to represent those most often found in the parts cleaning industry.
