Enantioselective Separation and Analysis of Chiral Herbicides

Herbicidal activity and non-target toxicity may be drastically different between enantiomers of a chiral herbicide. The enantiomers of chiral herbicides are usually separated and analyzed by chromatographic methods such as high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), gas chromatography (GC), supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC), and capillary electrophoresis (CE). Several chromatographic techniques are used for preparing pure-enantiomer herbicides. Some chiral herbicides have been commercialized with the pure active enantiomer, such as 1'S-metolachlor (aSS, aRS), quizalofop-p-ethyl, haloxyfop-p-methyl, fluazifop-p-butyl, (R)-napropamide, etc.
