Objective Motion Picture Quality Assessment in Secured Realtime Transmission System for Medical Application

Toward medical application of broadband Internet, we had evaluated realtime motion picture transmission system with DVTS (Digital Video Transport System) technology. However, quality assessment of DVTS had been out of our scope due to lack of automatic quality assessment system of motion pictures. In recent years, automatic picture quality assessment system has been invented, which enables us to make precise quantitative global-standard quality assessment of motion pictures. In this study, we evaluated quantitative assessment of DVTS with this new quality assessment technology. We also made quantitative comparison of motion picture quality according to encryption implementation over encrypted local network as well as subjective assessment by medical doctors. Our experiment showed 1) the quality of motion pictures is mainly dependent on jitter of DVTS processing, 2) comparison of quality of motion pictures between encryption implementations did not show any significant difference, 3) subjective assessment of motion pictures over encrypted network revealed enough quality for clinical situation. We plan to make more comparison study including one in the Internet or other encryption methods.
