TANDEM ACCELERATOR AND THE PROGRESS OF AMS IN JAPAN

摘要

Long-lived unstable nuclides existing in the nature in extremely small quantities are used for dating and tracer research in wide scientific fields. Since AMS (accelerator mass spectrometry) measurements for ~(14)C and ~(10)Be with accelerators used for nuclear physics experiments was successful and satisfied to be useful in detection of the long-lived unstable nuclides in 1977, many tandem accelerators have been modified to be used in AMS measurements for ~(14)C, ~(10)Be or ~(26)Al. While the accelerators used for the nuclear physics have been given reincumations to the AMS machine, small tandem accelerators dedicated to AMS have been supplied since 1981. Nowadays, two current, i.e., ~(14)C-, ~(10)Be- and ~(26)Al -AMS by exclusive machine and multipurpose AMS (~(l4)C, ~(10)Be, ~(26)Al, ~(36)Cl, ~(41)Ca, ~(39)Ni, ~(129)I and so on) by modification of old machine or new multipurpose machine, exist in the AMS field. In this paper, I will present the progress of AMS by using of tandem accelerator, AMS techniques and brief report of AMS facility in Japan.
