Japan Industrial Safety and Health Association (JISHA) marks the 40th Anniversary this year. When JISHA was established in 1964, the number of work - related deaths was over 6, 000 a year and the number of occupational accidents requiring 8 days and more work off was about 430, 000. the JISHA's main mission of those days was to tackle with activities aiming at reducing the number of occupational accidents. Since then, a variety of measures have been taken by full cooperation of government and private sector, such as Industrial Safety and Health Law was enforced in 1972. In consequence, occupational accidents steadily decreased. However, the number of fatal accidents is now still over 1. 600 a year. Moreover, major accidents such as explosion and fire occurred frequently at large enterprises last year. Besides, there are a lot of problems related to workers'health.
