Oligonucleotides covalently attached to hydrophilic dextran molecule that are also functionalized with a plurality of disulfide bonds. These dextrans are then conjugated to nanoparticles by a process of self-assembly. This method produces very stable conjugates because the oligonucleotides are conjugated to the particles by a plurality of dative covalent bonds. It can also be used to conjugate a variety of molecules, such as biotin, hapten and antibodies. DNA colorimetric detection with silver nanoparticle conjugate prepared by this method was demonstrated.
