Under carbon monoxide, functional ionic liquid [C6H5CH2mim][Co(CO)4] was synthesized from [C6H5CH2mim][Cl] and KCo(CO)4 carried out in a medium pressurereactor at 25 ℃ about 4 h. The structure of [C6H5CH2mim][Co(CO)4] was characterized by IR and H NMR. The IR (VCO) spectrum of the liquid diluted in terahydrofuran showeda strong peak at 1899.93 cm -1 which was characteristic of the tetrahedral [Co(CO)4] -anion, and H NMR illustrated the structure of [C6H5CH2mim] + . Under the conditions, i.e.,reaction pressure 3.7MPa, reaction temperature 75 ℃ for 10h, the yield of methyl 3-hydroxypropionate from hydroesterification of ethylene oxide (EO) using functional ionic liquid [C6H5CH2mim][Co(CO)4] as catalyst reached 90.8 %.
