Abstract: A series of new dimeric systems in which various rigid cores are coupled by polar oligoxyethylene and non polar oligomethylene units were synthesized to demonstrate that the internal incompatibility inducing the formation of mesophase may be strongly affected by polarity and volume fraction of the spacer and the mesogenic groups.!17
