摘要

The Head of Hylebos Waterway is part of the Commencement Bay Superfund Site in Tacoma, Washington. Dredging at the site is scheduled to begin on July 16, 2004 to remove over 230,000 cubic meters (300,000 cubic yards) of impacted sediment, with disposal at a regional upland landfill. This project incorporates many of the latest advances in remedial design, dredging, and monitoring to limit residual contamination following cleanup and to lower overall project costs. The paper presents specific discussion on each of the following project components: 1. Digital dredge controls 2. Two-pass dredging plan 3. Water management 4. Continuous monitoring of water quality 5. Rail transport and landfill disposal of dredged material The paper describes how these various project components have been developed and their purpose in reducing residual contamination, increasing the potential for project success without repetitive dredge passes, and lowering total project costs.
