Carbon precipitated at the heat exchanger in HDS process of vacuum residue was analyzed by SEM, OM, XRD,rnto be compared with the heavy fraction of a product, HDS-VR. The carbon was found to consist of Up-Streamrncarbon (US-C), anisotropic and isotropic carbons. The HDS-VR carried a small amount of mesophase spheres.rnMesophase spheres, which were produced in the reactor, and fine US-C components, which passed through the filter,rnwere precipitated with sludge in the heat exchanger where the sludge loses solubility in VR due to lowerrntemperature. Precipitated sludge and mesophase sphere was slowly carbonized among the solid particles of US-Crnon the wall of the heat exchangers into solid carbon, although some asphaltene is always included to be extractable.
