Carbon deposited on the filter after the reactor of HDS was analyzed by the elemental analyses, XRD, SEM andOptical microscopes, 13C-NMR and Raman spectrometry to elucidate its formation mechanism. The carbonconsisted of small grains which gathered to form the deposited block. XRD showed significant presence of FeS, andNaCl as well as the carbon with rather sharp peak at 26.6°. The carbon showed fine mosaic texture, being highlyaromatic and fairly carbonized. FeS and NaCl particles being nuclear of the carbon particles with mosaic texture,which are produced in the reactor. Such carbon particles gather into grains binded with asphaltene on the filter,suffering from successive carbonization due to the high temperature.
