Saskatchewan Highways and Transportation (DHT) and the Transportation Centre at the University of Saskatchewan are working to quantify the effects of varying amounts of manufactured fines on the physical and mechanical properties of the finest hot mix asphalt concrete gradation specified in Saskatchewan, Type 72. Three Type 72 mixes with varying levels of manufactured fines were tested and compared with the coarsest DHT mix, the Type 70. The laboratory characterization presented in this paper included Marshall 75 blow and Superpave Level I volumetric analysis, Marshall stability and flow, and triaxial frequency sweep for the four mixes. It was determined that Type 72 mixes are sensitive to the proportion of manufactured fines to natural fines. Significant benefits in terms of mix stability and mechanical behaviour were observed in the Type 72 mix with 60 percent manufactured fines as measured by total fines in the mix. Type 70 mix behaviour was comparable to that of a Type 72 mix with 40 percent manufactured fines across the characterization protocols performed in this research.
