Proper pavement construction implements a design recommendation into a physical realityrnwith acceptable riding quality. Major construction activities include detailing of specification and contractrndocuments, scheduling, construction operations, quality control, and the acquisition and processing ofrndata for transmission as end product specifications. Although end product specifications include surfacernsmoothness, pavement surface may loose some of the top aggregate particles (aggregate raveling) rightrnafter opening the highway for traffic. Such particles loss may decrease pavement riding quality.rnThis paper presents an approach to investigate the relationship between aggregate raveling of asphaltrnpavements and surface roughness as a means for assessing pavement riding quality. Pavementrndistresses have been surveyed on various highway classes (primary, feeder and secondary) of the ruralrnnetwork together with the corresponding pavement condition index. Results indicated that regressionrnrelationships (including power, exponential, and polynomial models) could be established betweenrnaggregate raveling and pavement roughness with a correlation factor ranging between 0.8 and 0.92rndepending on highway class and location. As well, relationships between pavement condition rating andrnaggregate raveling, and pavement roughness have been investigated.
