Using computer simulations, shear-induced particle ordering is investigated in dense flows of inelastic, monosized, spherical particles in bounded systems as shown in Fig.l. Previously, attempts have been made to simulate dense flows of granular materials on a computer using inelastic, rough, spherical particles [1]. The motivation was that dissipative hard-sphere fluids might be used as a basis for understanding the physics of deformation and flow of granular materials in industrial systems. In many industrial applications, interparticle interactions are typically assumed to consist of instantaneous collisions as well as longer term rubbing contacts.
