Early predictions on the stability of flat plates using a linear bifurcation buckling theory have shown good correspondence to experimental results for various loading conditions. When applied to curved panels, however, the linear buckling theory resulted in predictions considerably above the corresponding experimental results. As a result, a stability design process evolved in which empirical "knockdown factors" were introduced in order to compensate for the discrepancies between theoretical predictions and experimental results. This process therefore resulted in the need to conduct extensive and costly experimental programs.
