Satellite infrastructure is heavily used fortransmission of broadcast signals targeting end users’homes directly (Direct to Home, DTH), but also for feedingterrestrial transmitter networks. Until now these two usecases were implemented separately, consuming a significantproportion of valuable satellite capacity. For combiningDTH with terrestrial re-transmission of selected contentbased on a single satellite transmission chain, DVB hasdeveloped a solution called Single Illumination System(SIS), which has recently been published by ETSI as TS 103615. This solution considers that DTH targets satellitereceivers with Transport Streams (TS), whereas terrestrialtransmitters need to be addressed with either DVB-T2-MI(Modulator Interface) streams or streams containing DVBTmega-frames (TMF). The specification developed enablesthe terrestrial re-transmission by adding specific SISmetadata to the conventional TS transmitted via satellite.
