This paper presents a study on the behavior of the abutmen abutment-backfill system underrnpositive thermal variation in integral bridges built on sand. Structural model of a typical integralrnbridge is built considering the nonlinear behavior of the piles and soil-bridge interaction effects.rnStatic pushover analyses of the bridge are conducted to study the effect of various geometric,rnstructural and geotechnical parameters on the performance of the abutment-backfillrnsystem under positive thermal variations. Using the pushover analyses results, design equationsrnare formulated to determine the maximum forces in the abutments and maximum length of integralrnbridges based on the strength of the abutments.
