摘要

During the last decade systematic investigations on the contaminated site situation were conducted in many European countries. As a result federal and state registers of sites suspected for contamination were established. These registers include industrial sites, locations of former accidents with pollutant spills as well as landfills. In Table 1 an overview of suspected contaminated sites for some selected European countries and states are provided. The figures illustrate the dimensions of the problem and the large number of sites requiring prioritization, further detailed investigations and potential remediation. These contaminated sites present a hazard and potential risk not only to human health but also to ecosystems and natural resources such as ground water, soil and land area.
