Graphene oxide (GO) are attracted more attention because of the universal property, and rapidly applied in biomedical field, such as drug carriers, imaging or therapy. GO has been considered biocompatible with a broad variety of eukaryotic cells. Here, we show that, GO could kill Gram-positive and -negative bacteria rapidly and efficiently, with light irradiation. We investigated the efficacy of GO on bactericidal activation, the antibacterial activity of GO is concentration dependent, and enhanced by light irradiation. Our results describe the discovery of a property of partially GO as a potent antibacterial agent. The results showed that GO has excellent antibacterial activity when the concentration is above 300 μg/mL, the antibacterial rate can reached 100% when incubated with E. coli and B. subtilis for 4h.
