Abstract: Except for amplitude, the near IR spectra recorded through intact scalp and skull were identical to those from brain surface recordings. Reduction of scattering due to hypoxia was clearly evident in nitrogen induced spectra. Absorbance peaks, hemoglobin and aa$-3$/, were visible and did not seem to be affected by percentage of deoxyhemoglobin. The 600 nm peak is believed to be caused by scattering, not aa$-3$/ absorbance. Work is continuing to further demonstrate the validity of the hemoglobin and aa$-3$/ absorption peaks. !24
