Abstract: A phase modulation optical system was introduced to localize an object in a highly scattering medium. A good sensitivity of this system has been achieved. Liquid and solid brain models have been constructed and utilized to determine the optimum system configuration. Two different detection geometry, remission and transmission, have been tested on brain models. These two geometry scan different area of the brain model and both have a good detectability in the detection area. A 6 mm (or even smaller) absorber can be detected and the absorber position can be localized through a significant change in relative phase. !8
