In sum, social and information networks and social media present unprecedented sources of rich graph structured real datasets, offering a wealth of possibilities for analysis and mining. Applications of mining such datasets are manifold. In this talk, I will confine our attention to viral marketing and event and story detection and tracking, and describe work that has been done in our research group in recent years. I will conclude with several interesting open problems worthy of future research. The bibliography below is necessarily incomplete and most notably does not include most of our own work, in collaboration with several students, postocs, and colleagues. These works as well as the collaborators will be highlighted in the talk.
