Marker assisted cadmium toxicity investigation in sorghum seedlings

Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench seedlings were used to study cadmium toxicity.Inhibition of root growth and reduction of total soluble protein content were observed at high Cd concentrations. Zinc supplementation reduced Cd toxicity while potassium and sodium phosphates (separately) aggravated the toxicity. Combination of Zn and both phosphates helped the seedlings to perform better at same Cd concentration. The changes in intersimple sequence repeat (ISSR) profiles of shoots following treatment included variation in band intensity, loss of normal bands and appearance of new bands compared with the normal seedlings. Thus, DNA polymorphisms detected by ISSR analysis could be used as an investigative tool and as a useful biomarker assay for the dctection of genotoxic effects of Cd imposed toxicity.
