Based on close observation on wear progression and analysis on after use tundish castable, the improvement was made so as to achieve longer service life of tundish castable lining. The followings are the conclusion of this study. (1) The main wear cause which regulates the tundish castable lining life is structural spalling due to the slag penetration in refractory. (2) In an attempt to suppress the slag penetration, new materials were developed by increasing silica fine powder. They proved effective in suppressing slag penetration, which can be attributed to increase of slag viscosity in the pores, rather than pore size in castable. (3) In the field test with improved material, a notable extension of service life was achieved. (4) The next subject for more lengthy tundish castable lining life is wall toppling, which could be solved by further efforts to control the refractory expansion behaviors properly.
