The ground investigation was carried out late in the design process, resulting in a change in the piling technique and redesign of the foundations. Advanced analysis facilities allowed what appeared to be a severe uplift problem to be resolved without the need for expensive works on site. The involvement of the specialist foundation contractor as part of the design team enabled the correct piling solution to be chosen and tested on the site. This case history also illustrates the importance of a full understanding of the ground water regime. Ideally all specialists are in place at the start of the design process, properly managed and motivated to produce an economic well designed solution.
