A series of centrifuge tests was conducted with the aim of observing the behavior and performance of a sheet pile foundation on sand under combined vertical, horizontal and moment loading. The sheet pile foundation is now being considered as an alternative design for railway foundations in Japan. The test results indicate that sheet pile foundation can substantially increase the ultimate bearing capacity of square footing on sand. The ultimate vertical capacity of sheet pile foundation is higher than that of square footing 3.3 times for the case of L/B equal to 2. Using the combined loading apparatus, a series of tests was then carried out in order to investigate the capability of the footing to withstand the horizontal and moment load in beam centrifuge. The test data are useful to generate the shape of yield surface in vertical, horizontal and moment load space and can also be used to describe the elastro-plastic behavior of the footing. The results from swipe tests show the effectiveness of sheet pile foundations that the capacity of the foundation increases dramatically both in terms of horizontal and moment capacity compared to the shallow one.
