Musculoskeletal models serve as research tools to study the effect of individual muscle forces across multiple joints. Models are already used as diagnostic tools for treatment and rehabilitation such as in tendon transfer surgeries. We have developed a three-dimensional, four degree-of-freedom (df), geometric musculoskeletal forearm-hand model encompassing the elbow and wrist and sixteen muscles. Using muscle origin-insertion data with muscle on bone wrapping methods, we estimate a maximum potential moment index based on each muscle's peak moment arm (MA) and physiological cross-sectional area (PCSA) in an approach similar to that of other investigators, Our objective for this study was to calculate a normalized potential moment (NPM) index for each muscle in the eight motions (2 motions per df) studied across the elbow and wrist for use in future musculoskeletal modeling applications.
