The experimental conditions for the formation of the passivation layer in a sealed lithium-ion prismatic cell is important not only for the thermal and chemical stability of the layer but also for the amount of gas generated during the first charge which can induce a swelling of the container. In order to reduce the amount of gas generated, a study was carried out to evidence the nature of the gaseous components evolved during the first charge. The influence of the solvent components on the nature and amount of gas evolved is reported. It is also shown that the use of an additive such as vinylene carbonate (VC) drastically decreases the gas evolution during the passivation.
