THE ROLE OF GEOLOGIC DISPOSAL IN PREVENTING NUCLEAR PROLIFERATION

Discussions about international or regionalrnstorage and disposal facilities for managingrnunwanted nuclear materials have becomerncommonplace in a widening circle ofrnconferences, meetings, and articles.1,2,3,4,5 Properrnsafeguarding and disposition of excess nuclearrnweapon materials, particularly in Russia, are ofrnimmediate concern globally. Early presentationsrnof the Pangea Concept for internationalrnrepositories focused upon its safety andrnenvironmental benefits, but recent internationalrnpolitical events have reinforced the importancernof the nonproliferation advantages ofrninternational repositories and the critical role ofrnthe private sector in contributing to internationalrnsecurity.
