The Department of Energy has embarked on arnprogram at Hanford to vitrify the radioactive wastern(chemical residue after separation of plutonium). Thernpurpose is to immobilize the active isotopes againstrndissolving in hot water for centuries. However, the glassrnchosen dissolves in hot water at the rate of two grams ofrnglass per square meter per week. This author recommendsrnchanging to alumino-silicate glass, which has arnsolubility 1000 times lower.
