Coliphage T1 11303-B1 has been tested and used as a surrogate for Cryptosporidium in UVreactor bioassays in drinking water, and as a UV-sensitive challenge organism for wastewaterreactor validations. This presentation reports the characteristics of T1 in these roles, andevaluates its usefulness to the water quality industry. T1 was found to be well-suited for testingof UV reactors in the dose range of 2.5 to 20 mJ/cm~2. Due to the similarity of its UV doseresponse curve to Cryptosporidium, the resulting Reduction Equivalent dose may beconsiderable reduced relative to that assigned to results of bioassays using the conventionalcoliphage, MS2.
