PRELIMINARY ASSESSMENT OF REGIONAL BANKFULL RELATIONSHIPS IN THE UPPER KLAMATH BASIN, OREGON

"Bankfull" discharge and channel dimensions have become increasingly popular indices for use in stream channel assessment and channel restoration design. For example, instream structures are often designed to pass water, sediment, and debris at bankfull discharge. Estimating bankfull dimensions from drainage area is often desirable as a check of field estimates, particularly in cases where channel dimensions have been altered. However, judicious use of bankfull estimates, particularly regional bankfull relationships, requires understanding of the observed sources of variability in bankfull relationships, the magnitude of this variability, and the relationship of bankfull discharge to other indices such as "dominant discharge" and "effective discharge." Here, a study of bankfull discharge and dimensions at 27 sites in the Upper Klamath Basin of Oregon is described. This study has provided a set of preliminary regional relationships for prediction of bankfull characteristics from drainage area.
