Strategies for mitigating levels of noise or emissions generated from aircraft include engine redesign, airframe modifications, operational procedure changes, and others. While these changes might provide a reduction in either noise or emissions, it might at the same time produce an increase in the other, and a compromise between the benefit of reducing one versus the cost of increasing the other has to be reached. In order to properly perform this tradeoff, similar input data and methods must be used to calculate noise and emissions.Environmental regulations, airport and airspace redevelopment plans, and aviation policy decisions are the primary drivers that underscore the need to have an integrated assessment tool, capable of clearly articulating environmental trade-offs. These interdependencies or tradeoffs are important to the development of modeling aircraft and airports in a seamless model to bridge the gap of disconnected fleets between noise and emissions in order to have more consistent noise and emissions analyses.Currently, the calculation of the noise and emissions output from aircraft are where the noise and emissions analysts will typically calculate the respective noise and emissions metrics using a different set of tools and different input data. A streamlined analysis will provide a cost savings for scenario runs, along with time savings for data input between noise and emissions modeling. Therefore, there is a need to harmonize the tools, system data, input operational data, and computation methods. This paper discusses the work underway on harmonizing these areas and presents future work.
