We measured emissions from three different types of military aircraft, C-130H, B-52 and Class 700 rotary-wing aircraft. The measurements were made using a suite of optical remote sensing (ORS) instruments to measure gases and particulates in aircraft plumes and to develop methods for the determination of emission factors. The remote sensing measurements were a part of a larger Strategic Environmental Research and Development Program (SERDP) sponsored program to evaluate measurement approaches for the determination of emissions from military aircraft. This paper covers the results of the study on the emissions from Class 700 rotary-wing engines mounted on a test stand. In this study, we compare emission rates determined by two different methods, one a direct measurement of flux and the other assuming mass balance of carbon in the combustion of aliphatic fuel to form carbon dioxide.
