Since the early 1960's there have been reports that electromagnetic (EM) disturbances from items of aircraft passenger's carry-on portable electronic devices (PED), such as computers, games and stereos can affect the performance of aircraft navigation, communication and flight management systems. The ever increasing technology and complexity of both PEDs and also aircraft avionics systems, has resulted in the airline industry banning certain types of PED and prohibiting other PEDs during specific critical phases of flight such as take-off and landing. This paper reviews the history of PED interference to aircraft systems and gives an overview of some of the work which has been undertaken to determine whether or not there is a real problem. The results of practical interference investigations from typical PEDs onboard aircraft are presented. It is demonstrated that there is a possibility of interference from "permitted" PEDs affecting aircraft, however there are a number of factors which must generally combine to increase the probability of a PED causing interference to aircraft systems.
