Abstract: This paper presents a new approach for edge enhancement. An edge enhancement function is constructed which relies on gray information attached to the local area in a 2-dimensional image. This function can enhance edges in the image and determine the direction of the edges. Mathematical analysis shows that the commonly used operator of Sobel is a special case of this method. The microcomputer image processing system proves that the method works well for a variety of images. In addition, it can be implemented by parallel processing and can be easily implemented by existing hardware. The speed of implementation also demonstrates that it is practical for many applications.!
