Electrochemical properties of iron sulphide in weak acid systems

Iron sulphide, frequently found on carbon steel under sour conditions, is under cer-tain conditions expected to act as a (large area) cathode thereby increasing the cor-rosion rate of the underlying steel through galvanic coupling. In the present work electrochemical reactions taking place at iron sulphide (FeS) in the presence of ace-tic acid and carbonic acid have been studied using potentiodynamic measurements. Both the weak acid systems were found to increase the cathodic currents at iron sul-phide electrodes compared to the supporting electrolyte alone.
