This paper investigates performance issues that arise when displaying large 3 dimensional geographic datarnsets in an OpenGL/Java3D environment. Five possible schemes for the rendering of Digital Elevation Modelsrnfrom the United States Geological Survey are tested for memory usage and rendering processor efficiency.rnThese implementations exercise and compare Java3d geometry alternatives including, interleaved data sets,rnindexed geometry, geometry strips, and primitive versus object based data formats. Of the schemes tested, thernuse of interleaved, primitive data formats in TriangleStrips was found to use the least memory and have thernfastest rendering times.
