This paper reviews the literature related to virtual teams, knowledge sharing and communication. Thernliterature concerning teams and their use of collaborative and knowledge management technologies isrnconsidered. A case study at Nortel, Inc. Is discussed and findings are considered. The following eightrncategories of factors affecting communication and knowledge sharing were identified: 1) Leadership, 2) People,rn3) Team culture, 4) Organizational support, 5) Social networks, 6) Knowledge sharing and communication,rn7) Motivation and rewards and 8) Resources. The author addresses the issues of trust, collaboration,rngovernance, communication, efficacy and performance and introduces these in terms of a process model. ThernVirtual Team Process Model is a framework for studying issues relating to team process in geographicallyrndispersed groups. The model combines the moderators and resources found in the eight categories of factorsrnaffecting the virtual team process.
